Benvolgut uelo,

90 anys hui des de que vas nàixer… caram   Hui celebre el teu 90 aniversari amb un constipat de campionat. Jo que estava tan contenta de no haver-me posat malalta en quasibé dos anys!! ZoltarStark diu que és per culpa de l’estrés. Tinc molta faena darrerament. Com li vaig comentar a una molt benvolguda amiga fa uns mesos: treballe com una burra però gaudesc com una enana… seré un poni? He he he… jo no sé si serà que tinc calentura però encara em fa gràcia la frase a mi mateix. Tornant al treball un moment, estava pensant que t’hauria agradat rebre una postal meua de cada lloc on visite. És clar que a Mamela també… I ja posats, segur que reb hui un email de la meua germaneta dient-me quelcom com: “dona! per enviar postals, envia-li-les als teus germans a qui també els faria il·lusió!” I tot seguit ma mare dirà: “i  a mi! i a mi!” La veritat és que podria… però seria un esforç donat que els viatgets que faig últimament són curtíssims… Dit això als aeroports acostumen a vendre postals i segells… Res, que no tinc excusa… Serà aquesta la resolució “d’aniversari-uelo” d’enguany?

Al barri on visc a Brussel·les (ja veus, al maig faré dos anys a Brussel·les i encara no m’he cansat. És clar, que mai he estat més de 4 setmanes seguides ací ) cada mes reparteixen un full que fa el paper de diari parroquial/del barri. No t’agradaria saber el que realment pense d’ell, donat que vas passar de “republicà” de jove a catòlic “seriós” que no volia que els seus nets ateus s’apuntaren al teu pas (el de la Flagelació) i  que pensava que en realitat Franco era socialista (”socialiste” deies)… Mai vaig acabar d’entendre el teu raonament… El cas és que el diari aquest conté poesies i petites històries escrites per persones del barri i sempre em recorden a tu. És curiós com no canviem massa: el meu germà i jo acabem de publicar un article a una revista aragonesa i el primer que vam fer és enviar-lo a tota la família. I tu, cada cop que publicaves alguna cosa al diari de la Llar, ens feies una fotocòpia per tots els fills i nets.

El cas és que estem bé uelo. Alguns dels teus fills, nets i netes  han tingut algun entrebanc que un altre, però es pot dir que estem tots bé com sabràs. Tots t’enviem un petó ben fort pel teu aniversari, uelo.

Qualsevol iniciativa o projecte per impulsar l’ús i/o coneixement del català té d’entrada la meua aprovació i normalment m’hi sume ràpidament.

Aquest cop, però, unes quantes coses m’han fet pensar-m’ho dues vegades. El col·lectiu Català Sempre, amb la seua campanya de “Petició d’adreces” m’ha semblat molt poc encertada. De fet, tan poc encertada, que no m’hi he pogut estar de criticar-la obertament. Els que em coneixen personalment saben que perquè jo critique alguna iniciativa catalana, ja pot haver-me tocat la moral.

La raó principal per la meua critica, apareix ja d’entrada al començament de l’email:

Petició d’adreces.

Feu atenció: no petició d’adherits, sinó d’adreces…

Us faig un extracte de l’email a continuació:

Benvinguda o benvingut a Català Sempre si ens voleu acompanyar.

Tenim la vostra adreça perquè algun dels nostres adherits ha considerat que us pot interessar conèixer l’objectiu del nostre col·lectiu.

Quatre pegues que poden no ser res, però que m’han cridat l’atenció de forma molt negativa:

1. diuen que els dones l’adreça de gent que cregues que pot estar interessada i ells ja poden donar-se de baixa despres si volen…

“En la captació de nous adherits, quedarà absolutament preservada la teva privacitat.”

Té trellat, perquè si gent que em coneix, m’hi afegeix a iniciatives sense consultar-m’ho i/o dóna el meu email sense el meu consentiment, voldria saber qui són per dir-los 4 coses.

2. la gent dels emails que els hi dones, poden donar-se de baixa després si volen…

“Si no us interessa rebre la nostra informació, ens ho podeu comunicar responent aquest missatge.”

Per què he de perdre temps en donar-me de baixa d’un servei que no he demanat, sols perquè una altra persona ha pensat que jo hi hauria de ser? No, senyors, el que es fa es convidar a apuntar-se, no ficar dins la llista i després dir com desapuntar-se. El que esteu fent és crear una llista de gent a qui spamejar.

3. Des de quan per entrar a una web, es necessita un document i no una adreça web?

“Si obriu el fitxer que us adjuntem podreu entrar al nostre web…”

Sabeu que així és com funciona l’spam, no? sobretot quan es tenen virus als documents adjunts. Voleu que la gent us conega? Digueu: més informació a http://sempre.cat/ però mai com a document adjunt. I menys com a arxiu .doc!

4. La tercera crítica és menys seriosa, i fins i tot puc estar equivocada, però…

…però per quan he anat al vostre web, ja tenia els fums calfats. A la plana web posa:

per causar baixa enviar correu a la matixa adreça amb la paraula “baixa”

enviar correu??? hauria de ser

“envieu un correu”
o
“cal enviar un correu”… no?

Senyors i senyores de Català Sempre,

teniu una bona iniciativa, i estaria interessada en apuntar-m’hi. No ho faré, però, fins que no canvieu la forma que teniu de “reclutar” gent.

Si fos mal pensada, diria que no sou un grup català, sinó un d’espanyol demanant la gent que “delate” amics/coneguts que siguen catalanistes…

feliç aniversari. Com vas? Què has estat fent aquest darrer any? Que no ens ho contaries? Au, va, passa’t pels meus somnis i xarrem… Isabel Allende diria que podries visitar-nos en “persona” també. Si ho fas, fes-ho amb cura perquè per moltes ganes que tinga de veure’t de nou, si et trobara un dia al mig del menjador no crec que pugués reprimir un petit crit… o parell de paraulotes… i ja saps com de poc m’agrada a mi dir paraulotes…

La nit del dimarts al dimecres, vaig somniar amb la uela. Com bé sabràs, des que vas faltar, la uela ha millorat prou: torna a menjar, sobretot caixes i caixes de bombons de xocolata, i també parla i pregunta de nou. Diria que no t’ho prengueres personalment, però què vaig a dir-te de la vostra relació que no sàpies tu millor que jo. Al somni, però, la millora de la uela anava molt més enllà del que cap dels vostres fills ni néts es creuria mai. Al somni, et deia, anava a acompanyar a la uela al llit i de camí em deia “espera, que no em trobe molt bé, millor em quede ací llegint” Llegint?? La darrera vegada que li vaig veure llegir fou al 93, quan va mirar per damunt un diari on eixia mon pare. Tot i que als somnis moltes vegades acceptem com a naturals coses que desperts no acceptaríem mai, aquest fet de la uela llegint va sobrepassar la meua credulitat (més que si la dóna hagués volat, fixa’t tu!). Així doncs no vaig poder evitar exclamar “estàs llegint un llibre?” I la uela, “sí, vaig anar a una xarrada sobre … [no recorde la temàtica]… i vaig voler aprendre més del tema, i aquest llibre em va semblar adient i molt interessant“… Vaig despertar amb els ulls com a plats d’incredulitat.

Moltes vegades m’he preguntat què farà la uela quan està sola. Dubte que veja la tel·levisió, perquè sobre l’aparell sempre ha hagut una planta amb una fulla que queia sobre la pantalla i que els néts havíem d’apartar per poder veure alguna cosa. Ràdio no recorde veure’n cap. Llibres, com he dit, ni en somnis… bé ara en somnis sí, curiosament. Netejar? Potser, però tot el dia? Igual seu a la saleta pensant en tot i no-res i de tant en tant s’alça per agafar un altre bombó de xocolata, el qual gaudeix deixant que es disolga lentament mentre torna lentament al seu balancí.

La cosa és que no sabrem mai què fa, com en el cas del gat de Shrödinger aquell, perquè el moment que algú és a la casa amb ella, ja no podem saber què fa quan és sola.

Igual podria preguntar-li-ho. Però… No sé si ho saps, però un cop, fa ja molts anys, li vaig preguntar com us havíeu conegut. Entre rialles neguitoses i comentaris tipus, “xe, quina pregunta” o “bé, entonces…” (sí, “entonses”) em va contar la història… Uelo, no vaig entendre res! Recorde quedar-me mirant-me-la i mentre somreia pensar “eeeh… què? però com pot ser que no haja entés res de res???” Va estar prou curiós, si bé poc il·lustratiu.

Au, marxe al llit uelo. Espere que hages tingut un bon dia. Que sàpies que els teus néts et recordem sovint (vas veure com l’any passat es van passar quasibé tots per ací?).

Good reasons. Ok, then, here we go.

Summary of the steps to follow:

1. mark all files to be downloaded (Select:All at the bottom of the page)
2. go to Download Your Documents

3. Select the format you want the files to be downloaded in

4. Righ-click --> DownThemAll!
5. Press Start

Where is what?

Once inside Google docs (apologies for the duhism…):

Step 1:  mark all files to be downloaded (see num 1 in Image 1)

You can find Select: All at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2:  go to Download Your Documents (see num 2 in Image 1)

This is at the top right corner of the Google docs menu (not of Firefox, where I was initially looking… sigh…)

Step 3: choose the format for your documents (see num 3 in Image 1)

You can choose among a number of options, including Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org, csv and pdf.

Step 4: Download them all

After choosing the format, you will be sent to a new page where you will see your documents (see Image 2).

On this page:

• Right-click with your mouse
• Choose DownThemAll!...

Image 3 shows the new window that will appear.

Step 5: In the DownThemAll window

In the DownThemAll window (Image 3) make sure you have the options of Image 4 ticked (specially All files…)

Choose where do you want it to download your files (press the folder to browse your computer) and then Start.

A window like the one in Image 5 will let you know when is the process finished.

Step 1: Make sure you have Firefox 3

To check, go to Help --> About Mozilla Firefox.
If it says 2.whatever, update!

Step 2: Install the Greasemonkey Add-on (extension)

Which means,

• in Firefox, go to Tools --> Add-ons
• In the Add-ons windows (see Image 1) search for Greasemonkey
• Press Add to Firefox…
• Press Install Now

• Go to http://1st-soft.net/gdd/ and press Install Now
• Greasemonkey will open a window and you have to press Install again.

Step 4: Install the DownThemAll Firefox extension

Which means:

• in Firefox, again, go to Tools --> Add-ons
• In the Add-ons windows (see Image 2) search for Downthemall
• Press Add to Firefox…
• Press Install Now

• 9 out of 10 times I will use Google docs over MS Office or even OpenOffice.org.
• I log in every single day and check/edit a file there at least once every couple of hours.

Reasons to be using Google docs more and more often lately? Two mainly:

1. I travel quite a bit, and it is handy not to have to connect an external hard-disk to work on my files, have to update the versions I left at the office when I go back, etc. (Obviously, the drawback of always needing Internet is there).
2. I collaborate with different people on different projects, and Google docs allows me to share each document with only the appropriate people and we can all work on the same file.

Anyone that works with computers on a daily basis is aware that files can be lost, damaged, etc. For this reason, backups are very important. We do not always make them (and cry because of it when we lose the files) but we know we should make them.

As my use of Google docs increased, so did my fear of losing all these files. Google docs is a brilliant free service. Not only because it is free, but because things happen, the files stored in Google docs could disappear one day suddenly and I would be… let’s say… in a pickle.

So, from time to time, I would go to each document I was specially scared of losing, and did the usual:

File --> Download file as  for documents
File --> Export for spreadsheets

and saved a copy of the file on my laptop as a backup.

Ok… no biggie… unless you have 250 files. And you want to make a backup of all 250 files on a regular basis…

So today I  finally decided to stop postponing the inevitable and did some searching. Reading around I learnt about about a few tools you could install (if you had Windows) and/or paid.  Most of them, additionally, mass downloaded only doc files, as in no spreadsheets nor presentations. Of my 250 files, I would say > 200 are spreadsheets…

Luckily (as in, I was almost about to give up), I found this brilliant post HOW TO: Use Web-Based Office Tools Offline which talks about several Online Office applications:

• ThinkFree Office
• Zoho
• Google Docs

And then as an after thought has:

• Two Ways to Export Everything Out of Google Docs
  • Firefox Script Method
  • Free Online Backup Method (Syncplicity is a backup service)

Being a Firefox user myself, I read that Firefox Script Method to download files from Google Docs avidly. I followed their straight forward instructions and… voilà!  45 minutes later I had all 250 files on my laptop.

You might think 45 minutes are still many minutes, but you see, I have the files sorted in files, and the  Firefox Script Method’s one glitch (that I have noticed so far) is that it does not like Google docs folders. So I had to go folder by folder. Luckily I had 15+ files per folder… Add to this that between each download I got entertained looking at other stuff, and you will agree that the 45 minutes for 250 files is an upper limit. Its 20 seconds per file, not bad… Not convinced? Let me do a tiny test. I will do the experiment with 5 files, ok?

method 1:

1. marked one of the five files (without opening it)
2. went to Google docs’ top menu: More Actions --> Save As (and chose xls or doc accordingly)
3. saved file on my laptop
4. unmarked file in Google docs
5. repeat steps 1 to 4 with the other four files

Time taken: 1 minute (20 seconds per file).
Level of annoyance = high (result of being bored of repeating the same procedure over and over).

method 2:

1. mark all five files to be downloaded (Select: All at the bottom of the page)
2. go to Download Your Documents --> as Microsoft Office files
3. Right-click --> DownThemAll!
4. Press Start

Time taken: 27 seconds.
Level of annoyance = none (it would be low if I had files in several folders, as I would have to repeat the same process for each folder).

So, how does one install this mass Google docs download application? Now, time for a bit of “choose your own adventure”…

• If you are familiar with Firefox Add-ons and Scripts, follow the clear and straight forward instructions by Doriano “Paisano” Carta 
• If you are not familiar with Firefox Add-ons and/or prefer more step by step instructions, go to How to backup / download more than one Google doc at a time (part 2).

And then… silence.

Anna, Anka, James, Fozzy, Merel… and some others stumbled upon olivetalks and kindly wondered where had I got to. What happened to the hairs? What happened to the Rio machine? Should a Rio Laser Hair Remover machine be added to the Christmas wish list? LadyRostand, be a sport and give us an update, they pleaded.

So, because the end of the year is coming and I do not like having unfinished business/tasks carried forward to dirty the brand new year we all get on the 1st of January (a day when you feel you are forgiven for all the previous failed plans and you think you will be able to follow through all the “new” brilliant resolutions) and also because I feel I owe it all of you readers, specially those who have left comments (much appreciated!), here I am. It is Wednesday 24 December and I am about to publish the last Rio Hair Remover Machine post of 2008.

So what happened? Why did I suddenly stop?

If you read the 1st post of all, I said, and I quote: I intend to log [the use I make of the Rio machine] for 6 months, for two reasons: 1. they do say in the instructions it takes a few months/applications to see “real” results; 2. that’s how long I have before I’ll be going to the beach to suntan. That was on January 16th, 2008, so only 5 months since I started posting on Rio.

The boxing match day post was not the last day I used the Laser remover, for I actually used it one more time. Two weeks after that post, I grabbed the machine and I lasered my bikini line once more. As a farewell more than expecting much. Not because I did not intend to use the Rio machine again, but because I was leaving for holidays and after exposing the skin to the sun, they say you should not use the Laser Remover for a while (was it 2 months?).

So I left on holidays… and I had to shave. A few hairs seemed to be gone, but how could I tell if I had bold patches like TheAymster mentions on her last post if I was not sure about the initial density of hairs? Then again, if the results were so little visible, did the Rio machine do anything at all? I must admit, I could not care less while I was reading besides the swimming pool with the sun warming my back.

Then I came back from holidays and I knew I had a last Rio post way overdue. I even mentioned it in the somewhat apologetic post of August. And… I could just not get myself to write. Why? Well, if you have read TheAymster latest post on NoNo you have probably guessed…

I was bored out of my senses.

No, not of life, mind you, but of the Rio Machine. Using the machine is boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. Really really boring. I mean, I was so bored of using it, that I had to hide the box underneath some clothes so it would stop causing this boredom feeling from crawling up my skin every time I happened to glance in its direction. Even thinking about writing the last post on Rio was making me feel bored.

So…, did it work?

What, not thinking about it?

No, silly, the Rio machine.

Oh, I don’t know… Not much I think.

You should have used it more often to see results, some could say.

Puff! I would reply.

puff… zzzzzzzzz

I see… so… are you giving up?

Puff… no?

You mean you will try again?

Puff… I guess… in January… I could include it in my list of new year resolutions… I mean, if people are interested…

No!No!, Where did you go?

I’m being totally honest. Living. I have been busy being someone and that doesn’t afford me the time to No!No! Yes, it was easier & faster to use a razor than to use the No!No! But after about a 3 or 4 month hiatus I can say this for the product. It works… There is less hair. I noticed it yesterday and was shocked to see that yeah, there’s less there to contend with. I have bald patches! BALD PATCHES!!!! They are very small – in between the hairs, but they are there. It all has to do with the growth cycle of the follicles.

Now had I been diligent and used the tool as it was intended I’d probably be able to report to you a hairless body or at least close to it. It just goes to show that sticking to something is better, but like anyone – I was discouraged because I wasn’t seeing immediate results. Yes, I am human after all and not a mutant… at least, deep down. Still recommend the product.

In the post where I talked about the pros and cons of the hosting provider Hostgator, I mentioned how their 50,000 inode limit could cause serious problems to users who wanted to host for example a Moodle platform (go to this post to see the minimum inode number a default Moodle installation uses or other software packages like Wordpress or Gallery).

And in the The attack of the inodes post, I, with the help of some very nice visitors of olivetalks, discussed different ways of finding out the number of inodes in your account before their excess made Hostgator pull the plug.

So, surprise surprise, 28+ weeks after those posts… guess what? Check out the next image!

This is an image taken from the cpanel of my Hostgator account. Not only they show the number of inodes you are using,  but they have increased the limit to 250,000 inodes!! I doubt even I will reach that limit…

My brother has been telling me for years how cool the festival is: all the plays, shows, musicals, comedians… that one can see during this August macro festival. It seems this year there are 2088 different shows to choose from! That is over TWO THOUSAND different shows! You should check out this fact and other cool ones at edfringe.com.

But I can’t go, and it sounds like so much fun! And I’m missing out on it!

I have found the 2nd best thing, though. It does not beat being there in person, but alas! it is so near it! The answer is:

The independent fringe reviewer website

You see, every morning I can ease myself into the fringe by checking out their blog. This way I know what’s been going on.

I follow it with a look at the photoblog so I can visualize Edinburgh’s fringe flair better.

If there are no new interviews that day, I then plunge into the dozen reviews which have appeared in the last 24 hours at hairline. I laugh at their reviews of good comedians, I envy that the reviewers got to see this or that play and I pat my pocket happily at not having spent money in that other particularly bad show. I muse a bit over which two shows would I go see if I could be in Edinburgh right then and settle for one drama and one comedy.

I always choose a third show from the Free Fringe reviews, for there is no way I would be able to afford three plays per day and they have some free shows which are really intriguing (check out the Zoo show!).

I then take a peek at their Stalkers section which I have been leaving for the end, as a “fringe dessert”. Will the hairline people have spotted any famous people today??

Finally, just as I’m about to turn in for the day, I check out the Hairline quote of the day, for it guarantees to send me to bed with a smile on my lips.

As my subconscious takes over for the night, my mind fills up with all these images from the fringe, which I might not have seen in person, but they sure feel real.

Day 51 – Eureka!

I have finally figured out the one flaw in the design here people and it’s not in the No!No! itself. The system has only one place where it falls short and that is the little sanding disc you are given.

Now, before I go into why it’s so bad, I’ll just save you some time and tell you what to get to replace it. Go get a pedicure or foot sanding thing. You know. Those things in pedicure kits that look like an emery board for an elephant. Yeah! They take callouses off of your heels. Here’s why the No!No!’s is no good. First, it’s on a piece of foam with two flaps cut into it so you can hang on while you sand. Mine just fell apart. Also, the sand paper on it (I don’t know what else to call it) is like 1000 grit. It’s so fine, it feels like nothing is happening — and actually, so little is happening that I have had to continue shaving to get rid of the burnt up hairs that weren’t being sanded off!

So! GET THE NO!NO!, but throw that little, stupid sanding disc in the garbage! Useless. I believe they call it a “Buffer”. Toss it out and get something that heel sanding thing. Now I don’t have to shave anymore!.. YAY!!!

Day 42 – Definite Results

After 6 weeks of using the No!No! I can honestly tell you that the hair is growing in finer than before. If I do shave it takes the hair a day to come back, where before I got a five o’clock shadow! Wish I could tell you the hair is totally gone, but like anything, it takes time. Some areas are doing better than others. I’m pretty thankful for the progress so far and I’m sure it will continue. In the meantime, I’ll keep you posted. I’ll keep enjoying the smell of burning hairs and the infrequency of shaving for the time being.

BUT, olivetalks is not dead, it was just in a coma! A coma caused by overwork, a few days holidays and… did I mention too much work? So no posts have appeared in over a month and some of our regulars have started wondering whether to call the police to search for us (thanks Anna, iworms, Aymster!) but we are back! Yes, my dear “virtual” friends. We are back and we will make it up to you for not deserting us in these weeks of complete silence.
