Many times I had to deal with .rar files sent to me. Operating systems do not have a built in capability to open them. That means that to open a rar file you need to install an additional program. I suspect that’s quite a common problem facing many people and because of that I’ve decided to share this “how to”.
On Linux you can install a free unrar package which is available for most distributions. I suggest go to rpmseek.com and install the package specific for your Linux distribution. Other methods of installing unrar are distribution specific. For Ubuntu and Debian you can find instructions here. For Fedora and CentOS the explanations can be found here.
On Windows you can use 7-Zip which is a free program able to open also many other archive formats. I have been using 7-Zip almost exclusively on Windows when dealing with compressed files.
I don’t have any experience with Macs but I’ve found this free program UnRarX. If you find it useful let us know.
